BIO209H5 – Human Anatomy and Physiology II

This course studies the structure and function of the human body. Topics include integrating different organ systems, such as endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, and urogenital systems. An emphasis is placed on the integration of structure and function of the major organ systems. As part of this course, students may have the option of participating in an international learning experience that will have an additional cost and application process.

Trip - Peru Winter Reading Week

Approximate Travel Dates: Friday, February 16, 2024 – Sunday, February 25, 2024

Immerse yourself in the Peruvian health system when you spend 7 days travelling in the city of Tarapoto and the jungles of the Amazonia. You will visit local experts and clinicians who will teach you about traditional medicine used in Peru and explore the contrasts between the Canadian and Peruvian health systems. Travel alongside your Professor and your classmates as you learn about food sustainability, interact with plant-based medicine, and discover more about the holistic approach to healthcare.  

Why Participate ?

  • Learn about plant-based medicine, holistic approaches to healthy living, and examine how age-old traditions continue to serve marginalized populations in Peru 
  • Talk with clinicians, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) workers and community members to get a variety of perspectives on the challenges related to health and wellness in Amazonia and the Sacred Valley 
  • Visit modern health clinics and see how traditional medicinal practices continue to serve marginalized populations 

 

Itinerary*

Begin your trip in one of the most affluent districts in the city of Lima, Miraflores, where you be able to get out and explore the bustling district with a scavenger hunt. In Ventanilla city you will be able to spend the day with the Asociacion Casa Juvenil de Pachacutec (ACJP), a non-profit cultural association that aims to bring children and youth together to improve their quality of life and community via the arts. Later, you will visit Hospital Loayza, a national hospital founded by the first archbishop of Peru. 

From Lima, you will travel north to the town of Tarapoto characterized by the Amazonian Cloud Forest. In the small neighbourhood of San Roque, you will meet and work with Ecoaldeas. These ecovillages are communities with the goal of becoming more socially, culturally, economically and/or ecologically sustainable. Near the end of the trip, you will journey to and visit the Chirikyacu indigenous community.

Payments

Estimated Cost of International Component:: CAD $3,850.00 – $4,300.00

What is Included: Flights, transportation, accommodation, meals, in-country activities associated with the course, and trip-cancellation insurance. Funding Available! 

What is NOT Included: Course fees, fees associated with supplemental travel insurance, additional optional tours/activities while abroad, visa applications, medical exams, vaccinations, and any other additional costs. 

 

Funding 

Bursaries will be awarded based on demonstrated financial need (not linked to OSAP) as shown in your funding request in your UTM Abroad application. Read more about funding here

If you have applied for a bursary- You will hear back about your bursary application at the same time as your trip application.

Need to Know 

  • The cost and itinerary are subject to change. 

  • Applicants must submit an application for admission into the course to their respective departments and will be required to abide by the corresponding UTM Abroad application requirements and deadlines to participate in the international experience. 

  • Fees must be paid in full by the required deadlines. 

  • To prepare for the trip, students attending will participate in the mandatory pre-departure and safety abroad sessions.
